Redox (shorthand for reduction-oxidation reaction) describes all chemical reactions in which atoms have their oxidation number (oxidation state) changed. This can be either a simple redox process such as the oxidation of carbon to yield carbon dioxide or the reduction of carbon by hydrogen to yield methane (CH4), or it can be a complex process such as the oxidation of sugar in the human body through a series of very complex electron transfer processes.

The term redox comes from the two concepts of reduction and oxidation. It can be explained in simple terms:

  • Oxidation describes the loss of electrons or an increase in oxidation state by a molecule, atom or ion.
  • Reduction describes the gain of electrons or a decrease in oxidation state by a molecule, atom or ion.

Though sufficient for many purposes, these descriptions are not precisely correct. Oxidation and reduction properly refer to a change in oxidation number — the actual transfer of electrons may never occur. Thus, oxidation is better defined as an increase in oxidation number, and reduction as a decrease in oxidation number. In practice, the transfer of electrons will always cause a change in oxidation number, but there are many reactions that are classed as "redox" even though no electron transfer occurs (such as those involving covalent bonds).

Non-redox reactions, which do not involve changes in formal charge, are known as metathesis reactions.

The two parts of a redox reaction Rusting iron A bonfire. Combustion consists of redox reactions involving free radicals.

Whats the safest way to remove oxidation from a refractive lens?
Q. Refractive are used in headlights, stoplights and any thing in which it is designed for light to pass through in such a way that it is broken up into highly concentrated beams. Oxidation removal must take into consideration the function of the lens. Any method that could cause surface damage to the lens is unacceptable.

In oxidation, why do the colours of metals change when they become metal oxide?
Q. For example, magnesium is a silver-coloured, shiny materials. But when they change into magnesium oxide, the colour turns white. What causes the change of colour? How does the process of oxidation change the colour of the substances?

A. from what i recall about color perception, the colors of objects depends on what wavelength of the visible spectrum it reflects or absorbs. So if an object - a metal in this case - is colored blue or has a bluish hue --for example, cobalt -- then this is mainly because it reflects the blue region of the visible spectrum and absorbs the other colors. w/c color is reflected or absorbed depends on the electronic configuration of the valence electrons, so when a metal becomes an oxide, its valence electrons are changed resulting in a different color.. if it is white, then this means that all the colors of the visible spectrum is being reflected equally. this is my recall, I'm not absolutely sure if i'm right.

Does anyone know how to remove oxidation from exterior lighting fixtures?
Q. I installed all new low voltage exterior landscape lighting three years ago. The fixtures now have fairly noticable oxidation. I believe that they are powder coated cast aluminum. I have 20 path lights, a large five lamp pole fixture, and several floods that all have the same problem. I invested a fairly substansial amount of time and money in this lighting and I would like to find some way to remove the oxidation without having to replace all of the lights.

A. You can use car polish to remove the oxidation and restore the original color but to be honest, that is what Al does. If you clean it all up, in 3 years it will oxidize again. It's the exposure to ultraviolet radiation that is the culprit.
