Vowel reduction is the term in phonetics that refers to various changes in the acoustic quality of vowels , which are related to changes in stress, sonority, duration, loudness, articulation, or position in the word (e.g. for Creek language), and which are perceived as "weakening". It most often makes the vowels shorter as well.

In phonology, vowel reduction refers to a reduction of the number of distinct vowels, rather than their quality, either over time or when comparing related dialects. In some cases these two concepts may be related. For example, when vowels are phonetically reduced in English, there is also a reduction in the number of vowel contrasts. In other cases, however, phonemic reduction is due to historical vowel mergers (such as the merger of the a vowels in Mary, merry, marry in much of the United States) and has nothing to do with "weakening".

What is vowel reduction (Russian)?
Q. Okay, it may not be a real deep language subject people talk about, but I'm not sure. Today, in class, we were learning about number 20 - 100. We had a worksheet telling us things like when is pronounced, it sounds like it is spelled . Is this sort of 'reduction' just done with numbers? Do all words have pronunciation rules that make them sound differently than how they are written? I would like to learn to speak Russian well, and I would hate it if I practiced my whole life speaking incorrectly (or too meticulously) so that Russian people would have a hard time understanding me. >_< Thanks in advance.

A. reduction is common in all languages. basically, people are lazy to pronounce words clearly, and thus they "reduce" the regular sounds. reduction happens in all words, vowel reduction that you're asking about happens in syllables that are not accented. most of the time "o" is reduced to "a", "ye" - "ee" etc. There are different Russian dialects though, and people in the n-e region of russia, will not in fact, reduce vowels that people from around Moscow region would. e.g. the word " " (cow) would be prnounced as "koh-roh-vah" (no reduction) or "kah-roh-va" (reduction on the first syllable, second syllable is not reduced cuz it's stressed) reduction is not limited to vowels though. consonants get affected too, especially in the end of a… [cont.]

A. It is deletion, since you are deleting a phoneme from each of the words - /siks / --> /sik / and /fif / --> /fi /.

A. This website has some good practical tips But best practice always comes from movies =) The Godfather is a pleasure to watch and I think the accents are right on that. Apparently Tony Soprano has it down, too.
